NEW DELHI: The Centre has warned citizens against using USB phone charging ports in public places like airports, cafes, hotels, bus stands etc. The IT Ministry's Computer Emergency Response Team has warned that USB charging portal in public places can be misused by cybercriminals for malicious purposes.
Cybercriminals are reportedly using public charging stations to collect user data and install malware on connected phones. The method of hacking using USB is called 'juice jacking'. This can lead to theft of personal information, installation of malware or ransomware, and even device encryption with ransom demands.
For this reason, the Centre has suggested carrying power banks, avoiding pairing with unknown devices, locking the phone, preferring electrical wall outlets and considering charging the phone while it is turned off. Cybercrime can be reported at www.cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.
