Major fire breaks out in shopping complex in front of Kottayam Medical College

KOTTAYAM: A major fire broke out in the shopping complex which is in front of Kottayam Medical College in Gandhinagar. The fire has spread to three shops. One of the shops has been completely gutted in the fire. Plastic products and mattresses were stocked in large quantities inside this shop. Due to this, the fire spread quickly. The fire could not be fully extinguished. More fire units have reached the spot.

The people noticed the fire spreading at 9.30 am. The fire first spread to the shop ‘Thottathil Store’. The fire later spread to the other shops nearby. The blowing of winds accelerated the spread of the fire. The firefighters from Etumanur tried to bring the fire under control but did not succeed. More units were then called from Kottayam.

Most of the shops were closed as part of Easter. Firefighters broke open the doors of the shops and entered. The fire could not be fully extinguished as a large quantity of mattresses and plastic products were there in Thottathil Store. When the fire was doused in one place, it spread to other places. Smoke is bellowing from other shops. It is not clear whether fire has spread to these shops as well. Preliminary assessment is that short circuit is the cause of fire. The loss can be estimated only after the fire is completely doused.
