KUTTANAD: A man accused of killing his girlfriend, an Assamese woman working in a homestay, has been arrested. Safa Ali was arrested at Kottayam railway station on Wednesday night in connection with the murder of Hazira (44), who was working at Ayanas Homestay owned by Vineeth.
Safa Ali was close with Hazira for the past four years. The accused testified that the murder was prompted by Hazira's insistence that they should go to Assam and live together. He has a wife and children back in his native place. He also told the police that there were problems in his house due to relationship with Hazira.
On the day of the murder, the accused told Hazir that he would take her to Assam. Believing this, Hazira packed her bags and waited for Safa Ali. But instead, Safa Ali came and murdered her. Hazira's body was found around 7.30 on Wednesday morning. She could be strangled with a shawl, that left marks on her neck. Her earring was also missing.
Hazira lived in the room next to the kitchen. She didn't get up even after 6.30 am, after which the house owner tried to contact her. As her phone was switched off, he searched for her and found that the room was locked from outside. Her body was later found in the backyard of the house.
Hazira was a widow and had been working here for four months. Out of her two sons, one is working in a shop in Alappuzha.
