CPM has 101 immovable and movable items in Thrissur; hides information of assets, says ED

THRISSUR: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said the CPM has 101 immovable and movable items in the district alone and the party had concealed the information of assets. It is reported that only one building was shown in the account given to the income tax department and seven properties were sold. More information in this regard has been sought from the Thrissur district secretary. Only the information of assets of the district headquarters was shown by the party in the income tax account.

Meantime, the ED had conducted a preliminary inquiry into the collection of funds related to the construction of party offices at the local level. ED suspects that there is a mystery in hiding information like this. The ED has summoned Thrissur district secretary M M Varghese and former MP P K Biju for questioning in connection with the case.
The ED had earlier found that CPM have secret accounts in Karuvannur Bank. About 25 accounts in Thrissur were also found to be working as secret accounts. All these things have been reported to the election commission and Reserve Bank. The income tax department started an investigation after that. Soon after questioning the district secretary, the bank accounts were also frozen.

Apart from freezing the bank account, the income tax department also froze the transactions. A letter was also sent to the bank authorities in this regard. The income tax department also directed the CPM district committee not to spend the Rs one crore withdrawn from the account. The income tax department had also directed to clarify the financial source of the money in the account. The CPM Thrissur district leadership has informed the income tax department that they will give an answer after talking to a chartered accountant about the matter.

Meantime, M M Varghese responded that there was nothing to hide. The action is eyeing elections. The LDF has a clear upper hand in Kerala. The party has an account in Bank of India. M M Varghese told media that all bank transactions were done in accordance with the law.
