NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come down heavily on the 'Vote Jihad' remark made by Maria Alam, the niece of Congress leader Salman Khurshid. Speaking at an election rally in Anand in Gujarat, Modi said that Maria Alam has exposed the strategy of the INDIA front for the Lok Sabha elections.
"The INDIA front has asked Muslims to go for Vote Jihad. This has come from an educated family, not from a child coming out of a Madrasa. INDIA alliance is saying that all Muslims should get together and vote. The INDIA alliance has insulted democracy and the Constitution. Not even one Congress leader has come out rejecting this statement," Modi said.
"The INDIA alliance has a tacit understanding. On one hand, the INDIA alliance is trying to divide SC, ST, OBC and general categories and on the other, they are raising the slogan of Vote Jihad. This shows how dangerous their intentions are," the Prime Minister said.
Maria Alam made the controversial remark the other day during an election rally in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. She said that the BJP government can be brought down in India only through vote jihad. Following this, the Uttar Pradesh Police registered a case against her.
