Kochi infant death: Post-mortem report finds skull injury as cause of death, states pressure was applied on body

KOCHI: As per the preliminary post-mortem report of a deceased infant thrown from a flat, the cause of death is skull injury. The lower jaw is also injured. The police are investigating whether the fatal injury occurred inside the room or after falling on the road. The report also states that pressure was applied on the infant's body.

Meanwhile, the police have registered the arrest of the child's mother and she has been charged with murder. She gave birth this morning and has been admitted to the Ernakulam General Hospital.

City Police Commissioner S Shyamsunder said that the 23-year-old woman admitted that she had thrown the child down from the flat. He further said that her parents was unaware that their daughter was pregnant or had given birth or had thrown the baby down from the flat.

She gave birth in the toilet around 5 am. Three hours later, the baby, whose umbilical cord was not even cut, was wrapped in a parcel and thrown down. The commissioner said that it is suspected that he may have thrown down in a sudden panic.

The police will also investigate the alleged sexual abuse of the child's mother. Sources related to the police said that the person who is believed to have abused the said woman has been identified and he is under surveillance.
