Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, flash floods in Courtallam falls in Tenkasi, 17-year-old from Tirunelveli missing; travel restriction imposed

TENKASI: Heavy rains in parts of South Tamil Nadu. There was a flash flood at Courtallam waterfall in Tenkasi district. Ashwin (17), a native of Tirunelveli, went missing in a sudden heavy torrent. A video showing the water suddenly rushing and people, including children and women, running away scattered, is circulating. The fire brigade and police have started searching for Ashwin. A ban has been imposed on bathing in the falls due to the possibility of danger.

A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for the southern parts of Tamil Nadu for the next three days, along with the possibility of landslides. An orange alert has been declared in the Nilgiris district. Nilgiris District Collector M Aruna informed that travel to various tourist centers including Ooty has been banned from May 18 to 20.

Meanwhile, an Orange Alert has been declared in various districts in Kerala for the next five days. Although it is an Orange Alert, there is a chance of rain equal to the Red Alert on May 20 and 21.

Central Meteorological Department has declared an orange alert in the above-mentioned districts. A chance of heavy rain at isolated places is predicted. IMD defines heavy rainfall as 115.6mm to 204.4mm rainfall in 24 hours.
