Possibility of flash floods; yellow alert in 11 districts today, vital till June 2

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The central meteorological department has predicted heavy thundershowers for up to seven days in the state. Yellow alert has been sounded today in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode. Heavy rains will continue in Kerala till June 2, informed the meteorological department.


All districts received above average rainfall the other day. Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram were submerged in water. The capital received 52 mm of rain in one and a half hours and 94 mm in two hours in North Paravur. It rained 60 mm in an hour in Kalamassery and 61 mm in half an hour in Kannur.


Flash floods likely
There is a possibility of flash floods. Low-lying areas will be flooded. Cumulonimbus clouds may form and cloudbursts may occur. Landslides and mudslides will increase.

Monsoon
At least nine of the 14 rain gauges installed in Lakshadweep, Kerala and Karnataka should record 2.5 mm or more of rain for two consecutive days. Westerly winds in the Arabian Sea should increase in strength. The rate of radiation of heat going up from the ground should decrease. When these come together, monsoon happens. It arrived on June 8 last year and on May 29 in 2022.

Heavy rains in Kerala
There is waterlogging in many places of the state following the rain that battered continuously for more than four hours. Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi were submerged in water. Amayizhanchan canal in the capital city and Killiyar are overflowing. Water had entered the Sreekandeswaram Temple. Nearly 100 houses were flooded. Chalai market is also flooded.

There is sea surge at Mundakkal in Kollam. There is water at many places in Alappuzha. Three houses were completely and 13 partially destroyed. There is a flood threat in around 1000 houses. There are 392 families in 12 camps. Three houses were partially damaged in Thiruvalla. Manimalayar is overflowing. In Kottayam, Meenachilar is also overflowing. The water level in Cheruthoni river in Idukki has risen.


Water has entered Infopark Campus in Kochi and around 100 houses in Kalamassery Moolepadam. The fire force brought jiggy boats and relocated the families of Moolepadam. People were shifted from their flooded houses in Kunnumpuram Alappad Nagar with the help of the JCB.
