j

EDAPPAL: A construction worker who got scared after seeing CITU workers during a dispute occurred while unloading jumped from the building. Fayaz Shahjahan (23), a resident of Pathanapuram, Kollam, who was seriously injured, underwent emergency surgery at Thrissur Medical College.

Fayaz's legs were broken. The dispute was over the unloading of electrical equipment and other items to the shopping complex being built in Edappal town. When the cargo arrived at 9.45 pm on Thursday, CITU workers were not at the premises for unloading. The contractor then unloaded the materials with his four workers. Six CITU activists who got to know the information created a ruckus. There was an argument between the two groups following this. Meanwhile, the Changaramkulam police came back and suggested that the problem be resolved.

Workers were brutally beaten

Later, as the dispute escalated, the CITU workers surrounded and beat up the workers. Fayaz tried to escape and ran up the building. Seeing CITU workers following him, he jumped from the fourth floor to another low-rise building nearby. In the meantime, he fell on the terrace and was seriously injured.

He was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Edappal but was shifted to Thrissur Medical College for emergency surgery. Changaramkulam police took Fayaz's statement. Suresh, the contractor, said that the goods were unloaded by labourers because CITU workers were not present at that time. He added that the assault continued even after they promised to pay. He alleged that he was beaten up by a drunken group.
