THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Higher secondary teachers in the state have been banned from sending study materials, including notes, to students through social media platforms like WhatsApp. The ban was imposed by the Department of Public Education following the intervention of the Child Rights Commission.
Parents had filed a complaint with the Child Rights Commission regarding the excessive burden on students of providing study materials to higher secondary students through social media and the financial burden incurred by taking printouts and studying. The action was taken accordingly, the order states.
During the Covid period, online learning was encouraged as students could not attend classes. However, in the current situation where face-to-face classes are being conducted, sending such notes through WhatsApp will deprive children of the learning experience they should get in class and should be avoided, the order states.
Principals should monitor this matter closely and take action. The order points out that regional deputy directors should visit schools and intensify monitoring and should know the responses of students and parents.
