KOZHIKODE: A woman, accused in the case of killing her own baby by throwing on the sea wall, attempted suicide. The woman identified as Saranya of Koduvally House at Thayyil in Kannur, has been admitted at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital after she consumed poison.
She attempted suicide in the room taken near the Kozhikode railway station. Reports said there was no one else with her. She attempted suicide when the trial in the case was scheduled to begin today at the Thaliparamba court.
The incident related to the case happened in February 2020. The body of the baby sleeping with her parents, was recovered from the boulders on the wall. Saranya's one-and-a-half-years old Viyan was killed. Saranya told police that after killing the baby, she planned to put the blame on her husband Pranav and wanted to live safely with her lover.
The baby, who was sleeping with Pranav and Saranya, was found dead on the Thayyil beach in the morning. Saranya was nabbed while trying to escape by making her husband, who comes home occasionally, the accused. Saranya's clothes and bed sheet were subjected to forensic examination. Saranya planned to kill the baby by throwing into the sea. The forensic team that examined Saranya's clothes found traces of salt. However, Saranya did not confess to the crime during the first interrogation.
Saranya was waiting for an opportunity to kill the baby. Pranav, who was estranged from Saranya's father, came home on days only when his father-in-law went fishing. Saranya chose this time for the murder.
Saranya took the baby and went to the beach after her husband slept. When the baby cried, she covered his mouth with her hands. She tried to throw the baby into the sea, but was afraid that the body might float away. So, she threw him against the stone wall to ensure his death. The post-mortem report stated that the head injury was the cause of death.
Pranav had filed a complaint with the Kannur City Police stating that the child, who was sleeping at home at night, was missing in the morning. The body was found by locals among a rock pile on the Thayyil Kadappuram road. The body was lying upside down. There were wounds on the forehead and hands. From the beginning, the investigating officers were confident that the baby, who had slept with her parents, would not go anywhere without their knowledge.
The police were confused when Saranya told police that her husband was behind the murder and he said that it was Saranya who killed the baby. The contradiction in Saranya's statements led the police to the accused. Saranya's lover, Nithin (28) of Kannur was also arrested in the case. The police had said that it was Nithin who conspired and instigated the murder of the child.
