THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The triple lockdown imposed in the city corporation area for a week in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases through contact has come into force. The triple lockdown started Monday morning at 6 am. The triple lockdown was imposed following health experts warning that the situation in the capital city could deteriorate amid an increasing number of unknown sources of infected cases.

Only entry of emergency services will be permitted in the capital city for a week. There will be no public transportation. Secretariat and other government offices would remain closed. Hospitals will be opened. Even if medical shops are opened, only those having an affidavit will be permitted to go. Though shops will be opened, people cannot go directly and buy things. All exams have been postponed. DCP has informed that goods would be delivered at homes from evening. Only emergency items will be delivered.

The lockdown imposed has brought the capital city to a standstill. The people panicked with the forcible closure of shops and petrol pumps last evening. The unexpected announcement of the lockdown was at a time without giving time for the people to store essential items.

Meantime, the situation in Kochi is very serious. The police has intensified checking with the rise in number of infected cases through contact. Strict action will be taken against those violating COVID protocol. A shop in Kaloor was asked to close for not maintaining social distancing. Three were taken into custody for not wearing masks.

Though there is a rise in number of infected cases, the district administration is of the opinion that there is no community transmission. District collector S Suhas had yesterday informed that there is nothing to fear.
