Lakshadweep power privatization: Administrator to go ahead with project

lakshadweep

KOCHI: Despite the protests, Administrator Praful Khoda Patel has taken steps to privatize the power sector in Lakshadweep. Patel discussed the issue with top officials yesterday. Following this, two junior engineers, an executive engineer and a special secretary of the Lakshadweep Electricity Department will leave for Daman tomorrow. The aim is to evaluate the implementation of the power project in Daman.

The tender process for the privatization is expected to begin in three weeks. The process, scheduled for May, has been delayed due to technical glitches.

The move to privatize the power sector has raised concerns among islanders. Electricity is usually distributed on the island after generating it from large diesel generators.

The Revenue Department surveyed three places in Kavaratti yesterday evening. Indications are that this is for the construction of a hospital. Area was measured at the Harbor Office, Dakkk Bungalow, and Children's Park.

Meanwhile, the BJP was expelled from the Save Lakshadweep Forum after the party refused to withdraw the case filed against actor Aisha Sultana. The Forum Core Committee alleged that the representatives of BJP were not ready to withdraw the case even after Aisha clarified her part.
