Modi's visit ignites tourism surge in Lakshadweep; Anticipates remarkable growth

KOCHI: Lakshadweep, an exquisite paradise boasting stunning natural wonders like coral reefs and pristine islands is poised for a tourism boom through enhanced infrastructure development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit has drawn global attention, prompting the central government to blueprint tourism expansion in the region. Plans include constructing an airport at Minicoy, alongside the existing Agatti and Bangaram airports and introducing a seaplane service linking the islands.

Tourism experts predict that with improved facilities, Lakshadweep could surpass the Maldives as a favoured tourist destination. The allure of coral reefs, predicted to vanish within 50 years serves as a major attraction. Key islands such as Bangaram, Agatti, Kadamat, Minicoy, Kalpeni and Kavarathi beckon travellers reachable by both boats and planes from Kochi. Indian Airlines operates small aircraft to Agatti and Bangaram while chartered helicopters and seven ships also facilitate travel.

However, the current facilities for visitors remain limited with small resorts, tents and cottages available. The tourism department's packages often face cancellations due to weather conditions or travel restrictions. Moreover, acquiring a special permit online is mandatory to access Lakshadweep.

To capitalize on its tourism potential, significant improvements are proposed. These include drafting a comprehensive master plan for tourism development integrating Lakshadweep into Udan for short-haul flights permitting 150-200 passenger fast ships and increasing speed boat connections between resorts and islands.

Paul K Mathew, a member of the National Managing Committee of the Travel Agents Federation of India, envisions Lakshadweep becoming the ultimate island tourism destination globally once accommodation and travel facilities are enhanced.
