SANAA: The Yemen Appeal Court rejected the appeal submitted by Malayali woman Nimisha Priya, who was awarded a death sentence in connection with the murder of a Yemeni citizen. Nimisha Priya had approached the court with the help of the Indian Embassy.
In her appeal, Nimisha had sought the commutation of the death sentence on the grounds of being a woman. However, with the court rejecting her appeal, it has become evident that the death sentence is awaiting her.
The only place Nimisha Priya can now rely on is the Supreme Court of Yemen. The Supreme Court may reconsider the decision of the Appeal Court. The court may take an action in favour of Nimisha Priya after checking whether the procedures leading to this judgment were correct. However, we will have to wait to see whether the Yemeni Supreme Court will take a decision against the death penalty. Nimisha Priya has been in prison in Yemen for years as part of the trial.
The incident happened on July 25 in 2017. Nimisha Priya, her friend Hanan, a Yemeni nurse and another youth murdered Talal Abdu Mehdi of Yemen.
Meanwhile, Nimisha Priya could have escaped from the death penalty by gaining pardon from the family of Talal. However, Talal's family was not ready to pardon her.
