Crops damaged by summer showers, debt ridden farmer commits suicide, gets only Rs 2,000 from govt

ALAPPUZHA: A farmer committed suicide by hanging after summer showers caused damage to his crops grown on eight acres of land. He has been identified as Rajeev of Niranam in Thiruvalla. He was found hanging near his paddy field Monday morning.

Rajeev's eight acres of paddy fields were damaged in the summer showers. He had taken a loan for agricultural purposes. He suffered a financial loss after the damage of crops. His relatives said that he took the drastic step as he could not tolerate his financial difficulties.


He got only Rs 2000 from the state government after the crops were damaged in the summer showers. The farmers including Rajeev had approached the high court alleging that they were not paid adequate compensation. In between this, he committed suicide.
