Suicide over dowry harassment; Court to pronounce verdict in Vismaya case on May 23

KOLLAM: The verdict in the Vismaya case will be pronounced on May 23 after a four-month long trial. The verdict will be pronounced by Kollam district additional sessions court.

Vismaya was found hanging in the bathroom of her husband’s house at Poruvazhy in Sasthamcotta on June 21. The charge sheet asserted that it was a suicide following dowry harassment. Vismaya’s husband Kiran Kumar, who was assistant motor vehicle inspector in the motor vehicle department, was terminated from government service after involved in the case.

The charge sheet was filed after imposing nine charges including abetment to suicide. Kiran married Vismaya on May 30 in 2020. He constantly harassed her for not getting the promised gold as dowry and the car given by Vismaya's family was not the car he wanted.

Kiran’s father Sadasivan Pillai, nephew Anil Kumar, wife Bindu Kumar, accused sister Keerthi, her husband Mukesh M Nair, the five witnesses, had turned hostile during cross examination.
