'Even if it seems unfair at first, it will benefit the country in the long run'; Prime Minister's explanation on Agnipath scheme

NEW DELHI: PM Modi took a dig at nationwide protests against the Agnipath scheme. He said that it is the misfortune of the country that many things done with good purpose get caught in the colour of politics. 'Decisions that now seem unjust, will help in building the nation', said Modi. The Prime Minister made this remark at a public function in Bengaluru without direct reference to Agnipath project.

Many of the critics are hoping for a change in the decision but the government is sticking to the decision. Military sources said yesterday that the new change was in line with global trends in the use of technology and in reducing the age of soldiers.

Citizens between the ages of 17.5 and 21 years can work as Agniveers for four years under the Agnipath scheme. But no gratuity or pension will be given after retirement. Meanwhile, there were strong protests against Agniveer recruitment in various states. The government has announced that appointments will be made in the police, paramilitary, home and defense institutions. But none of this was enough to quell the protest. Some organizations have also called for a Bharat Bandh today.
