NEW DELHI: Draupadi Murmu, who took oath as the 15th President of India on Monday, revealed that her real name was not 'Draupadi' and that it was a teacher who gave her the name during her school days. The new president said this in a recent interview.
"As per the Santali culture, if a girl is born in the family, she takes the name of her grandmother, while a boy takes his grandfather's name. Thus I was named 'Puti'. During my school days, one of my teachers started calling me 'Draupadi'. The teacher did not like my previous name and changed it for good, Gradually, 'Draupadi' became my name as other teachers and classmates started calling me by that name," the president said. The president added that she started using the title 'Murmu' after her marriage to Shyam Charan Tudu.
