THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After Covid-19 lockdown, the consumption and smuggling of synthetic drugs have increased massively in Kerala. The new generation has switched to synthetic drugs like MDMA and LSD stamp because they are safer than alcohol and ganja to smuggle and use.
In 2020, 564 grams of MDMA was seized by Excise in the entire state. In 2021, it was 6130.5 grams. It means that it has increased tenfold. Within the last six months, 4036 grams of MDMA were seized. After another six months the cases will be doubled.
In 2020, the police registered a total of 4968 drug cases, but in the last six months, the number of cases has tripled. The reality is that not even a quarter of the drugs smuggled into the state are caught. Cases of cannabis and hashish oil have also increased in the last two years. Such drugs reach Kerala from Bengaluru, which is considered as the hub of all these.
