THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George said that the state has strengthened the preventive measures in the wake of the recent surge of Covid cases in countries, including China. "All districts are on alert. Meetings are taking place in every district and preventive measures and monitoring are being intensified. All districts have been directed to strengthen preventive measures and report immediately if there is a surge in Covid cases. The health department will review the activities of all districts on Friday," Veena George said.
"The health department has directed districts to send more Covid samples for genetic sequencing to monitor for new variants. Whole genome sequencing will be conducted to detect different covid variants. Each district should send samples for genetic testing at designated labs. It has been directed to report accurately if any covid variants are found in any district and strengthen prevention activities accordingly. People admitted to hospitals with respiratory diseases will be tested for Covid-19. Also, people with a severe fever, sore throat and shortness of breath will be tested for Covid," the minister said.
"Given that it is the holiday season, extra caution should be exercised. People should avoid going out in crowded areas and in public without a mask on. People with symptoms like fever, cough and cold should not closely interact with the elderly and children. Special care should be given to the elderly, those with co-morbidities and children. Everyone should wash their hands with soap and water after returning from outside," she added.
