VISAKHAPATNAM: Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has criticised Malayali player Sanju Samson for failing to perform well in the fourth T20I against New Zealand. Despite starting well, Sanju was dismissed by Mitchell Santner after scoring 24 runs off 15 balls. Sanju had managed to score only 40 runs in the last four matches. Sunil Gavaskar criticised the player's batting through commentary.

"My first impression is that there was no footwork at all. I'm not very sure whether there was any turn; the first impression was he was just standing there, making room and playing through the off side," Gavaskar said on commentary.

"Like I said, there was hardly any movement of the feet. Going outside leg-stump, once again exposing all three stumps-and when you miss, the bowler's going to hit. That's what happened to Sanju Samson for the second time around," 'Little Master' added.

Reports suggest that Sanju's place in the team will be in the balance if he fails to perform well in the fifth T20I to be held in Kariyavattom tomorrow. However, the coaches claimed that he is batting well in the nets. With Ishan Kishan performing well at number three, Sanju's place in the World Cup team is also in question. India suffered a heavy 50-run defeat against the Kiwis in the fourth T20I. Chasing a target of 216 runs, India were bowled out for 165 runs in 18.4 overs.
