The NIA first registered a case against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, head of Sikhs for Justice in Canada, in 2019. The central government banned Sikhs for Justice on July 10, 2019. Pannun was declared terrorist on July 1, 2020.
The NIA had collected crucial information about his terrorist activities in Punjab and other parts of the country. It was also found that he was misusing cyberspace to recruit youth for terrorist activities. He had called on leaders of criminal gangs and youth in Punjab through social media to fight for an independent country called Khalistan. He had threatened Hindus in Canada to return to India during the India-Canada crisis.
