KUWAIT CITY: The six-storied building that caught fire leading to the death of 49 expats including Malayalees, was taken on lease by K G Abraham, a Malayali industrialist and managing director of NBTC Group and Kerala based KGA Group. The employees of the NBTC Group, one of the largest construction groups in the Gulf countries, were staying in the flat.
Abraham, a well-known businessman in Kerala, hails from Niranam in Thiruvalla. Reports said Abraham, a businessman in Kuwait for the past 38 years, has assets worth Rs 4000 crores.
Abraham reached Kuwait at the age of 22 with a diploma in civil engineering and gradually built his business empire. He was at the forefront to support the people of Kerala during the floods of 2018 and 2019.
The NBTC Group mainly focuses on engineering, construction, marketing and education sectors. He has companies including oil and petrochemical sectors in Kuwait and other West Asian countries. He is the chairman of Crowne Plaza, a five-star hotel at Kundannoor in Ernakulam and a partner in KGA Elite Continental Hotel in Thiruvalla. He has also invested in the real estate sector in Kerala.
KGA is also one of the producers of the super hit Blessy film ‘Aadujeevitham’ starring Prithviraj. He landed in controversy for criticizing the LDF Government led by Pinarayi Vijayan for swindling money from CM’s distress relief fund. He said that the relief fund did not reach the people deserved and regretted voting for the LDF.
He started his career by working in a company called Badha and Musairi for 60 dinars. After working there for seven years, he started his own company. He took up small construction works and completed them successfully. His group grew fast after the 1990 invasion of Iraq. He has also a supermarket chain called Highway Center in Kuwait.
