HYDERABAD: Actress Sreeleela, who recently added "Doctor" to her name after completing her MBBS, has found herself at the center of a social media firestorm. The controversy stems from comments she made regarding menstruation and professional work ethic during a success event for her recent film, Ustaad Bhagat Singh.
While addressing the audience about the grit required to succeed in the film industry, the actress shared her personal experience of shooting high-energy dance sequences while menstruating. However, it was her framing of these biological realities as "excuses" that triggered a wave of backlash.
Speaking at the event, Sreeleela said:
"All of my songs, I can say, most of them at least have been appreciated. I have shot while I have been on my period, so that is not an excuse anywhere. When we want things in power, when we say we want things equally, I feel we have to push beyond physiological barriers. So psychological, physiological, all of this is not an excuse."
The remarks quickly went viral, with many netizens and health advocates calling the statement "insensitive" and "misinformed." Critics were particularly surprised given her medical background, arguing that as a doctor, she should understand that menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) and conditions like PCOS or endometriosis can be physically debilitating for many women.
Social media users pointed out that while Sreeleela’s personal threshold might allow her to perform, labelling the biological struggle of others as an "excuse" promotes a culture of toxic productivity.
