'Recognition of strong leadership'; Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina praises Suvendu Adhikari

NEW DELHI: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has praised BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari after he assumed office as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. In a statement, Hasina said the BJP’s victory in Bengal reflects the people’s faith in Suvendu’s popular leadership. The congratulatory message from unexpected quarters came soon after Suvendu Adhikari took the oath as Chief Minister.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Shri Suvendu Adhikari on behalf of myself and the people of Bangladesh. The mandate given by the people of Bengal is recognition of his strong leadership. I believe the relationship between Bangladesh and West Bengal, which share language and culture, will reach greater heights during Suvendu’s tenure. Let us work together for the welfare and development of the people of both Bengals,” Hasina said in the statement.

Hasina is currently living in India as a refugee. In 2024, following student protests, she lost power and reportedly fled from Dhaka to India in a military helicopter. A court in Bangladesh later sentenced her to death over allegations related to the suppression of protesters and crimes against humanity.

The BJP came to power in West Bengal by winning 207 out of 294 seats, ending Mamata Banerjee’s continued rule in the state. The party had contested the election with a strong promise to stop illegal immigration.
