NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today inaugurate the nation India's first underwater metro tunnel for the Kolkata Metro, which will be constructed 16 meters below the bed of the Hooghly River and is 520 meters long. This engineering marvel is part of Kolkata Metro's 16.6 km corridor that connects Howrah on the west side of the Hooghly River with Salt Lake City on the east bank.

The train will cross the tunnel in 45 seconds.

Deepest metro station in India as it is built at the level of the tunnel. 40 metres deep from ground level. The height of a ten-story building.
16.6 km east-west metro corridor and 10.8 km underground including tunnel.
Three of the six stations on the route are underground.
