THIRUVANTHAPURAM: Gangs are active on social media spreading fake messages of Kerala Police and ensnaring women. The group will send a message that the police have started a scheme to provide vehicles to bring women home at night. The message also says that the vehicle will arrive from the control room or the station.
A mobile number has also been provided for those who need assistance between 10 pm and 6 am. Help can be requested through missed calls and messages. Kerala police toll-free numbers 1091, 100 have also been given along with the fake mobile number. This is a ploy to make victims believe that the number 7837018555 in the fake message also belongs to the police.
When the men who got suspicious called this mobile number, the call was immediately disconnected after hearing the men's voices. The phone was switched off later. When the toll-free numbers of the police were called, it was told to call the control room to get help in case of an emergency.
Extortion by giving OTP
Initial information is that the fake number is from Punjab. It is believed that the aim is to tap the money in the accounts.
Fraud starts when women call. Women will share the requested information believing that they are calling the police. The police suspect that it is a ploy to get the Aadhaar number, address and OTP sent by them in the name of sending the vehicle.
112 for emergency assistance
The fake message has been noticed. A detailed investigation has been initiated.
