CHALAKUDY: A herd of wild elephants attacked people in their sleep in Valparai. The elephants came there when the family of five was sleeping. A 52-year-old woman, who came out seeing the elephant damaging the window and her two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter, were attacked and killed. The herd of wild elephants attacked the house of Sukanya in Ummandimudukku. There were five in the house at that time. Assala (52) and her granddaughter Hemashree, who came out seeing the elephant, were attacked by an elephant standing in front of the house.

The baby that the elephant threw died instantly. The elephant then threw Assala too. The seriously injured Assala died on way to the Valparai Government Hospital. The elephant attack was in the fifth division of Ummandimudukku Estate. There was also a presence of a leopard here earlier. The bodies of Assala and Hemashree have been sent for postmortem.
