KOCHI: The high court has directed the state government to consider conducting an audit on the infrastructure of beverage outlets in the state. The high court observed that the number of liquor outlets in the state is very low and that there are more liquor outlets in the neighbouring states. When there are 2,000 liquor outlets in the neighbouring states, there are only 300 in Kerala. There are more liquor shops in the small area of Mahe. As the number is low, the high court said action be taken to increase the infrastructure in liquor stores.
The excise commissioner told the high court that steps have been taken to control the rush at beverage outlets in the state. The court said they are so far satisfied with the steps taken by Bevco.
Bevco is preparing to control the crowds by increasing the number of counters in the outlets. The control is by making an announcement and a token system. Those coming to buy alcohol should be provided with facilities including drinking water. In order to make sure that social distancing is maintained, a circle should be drawn and should make people stand in it. The circular issued to Bevco outlets said police help will also be ensured to control the rush.
