Obesity treatment: Ozempic flowing in from abroad; price up to Rs 75,000 per dose

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ozempic, a drug used for diabetes treatment in foreign countries, is also in demand in Kerala as it helps in reducing obesity. It is not available in India so it is brought from abroad.

The main attraction is the amazing weight loss within three months. Ozempic is described as a rich man's drug as it costs up to Rs 75,000 per dose. There are reports of it being used in foreign countries, including by superstars. Ozempic for diabetes is given in high doses by injection and is effective in weight loss.

The injectable drug is marketed abroad under the name Ozempic for diabetics and Wegovy for obesity. Side effects like nausea, vomiting and severe gastritis have been reported. Doctors do not prescribe it as it is not available in India. However, it is reported that it is widely arriving from UAE and USA for use in Kerala as well. Some marketing companies in Kerala are also providing it. The drugs are manufactured by the pharma company Novo Nordisk.

Rybelsus in India

Rybelsus, a pill form of Ozempic, is also available in Kerala. However, it is less effective than Ozempic for weight loss. It costs up to ten thousand rupees. Medicines like Liraglutide, and Saxenda, are available in India as weight loss treatment medicines.

Ozempic Injection has been found to be effective in weight loss. With more similar drugs on the market within five years, big changes are expected in the treatment of obesity.
