IDUKKI: The water level in Idukki Dam rose to 2390.86 feet. The maximum storage limit is 2403 feet. A blue alert has been declared in Idukki against the backdrop of high water level. Despite the warning, KSEB officials said there was no cause for concern.
The shutters are opened only when the maximum storage capacity of the dam is reached. However, the Central Water Commission has directed that a blue alert be declared at least 36 hours in advance. An orange alert should be sounded when the water reaches 2396 feet and a red alert at 2397 feet. The blue alert was announced as part of a precautionary measure before opening the shutters.
At present, the water level in the dam is unlikely to rise. This is due to the lack of rainfall and low flow in the catchment area of the dam. However, the Kerala Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in Kerala today and tomorrow. Orange alert has been declared in Palakkad and Malappuram and yellow alert in all districts except Kozhikode and Wayanad.
