In the Alappuzha district, Congress was able to gain victory only in the Harippad constituency. Even though M Liju has contested in Ambalapuzha, he got defeated. He said that he is taking up the moral responsibility of the defeat and he has decided to resign after consulting with senior leaders including Ramesh Chennithala.
In the last Lok Sabha polls, UDF won 19 seats out of 20, and it only lost the Alappuzha seat where Shanimol Usman of Congress contested. At that time also, Liju has expressed willingness to resign, but following the intervention of state leadership, he changed his decision. But as the party again faced a defeat in the district in the assembly polls, Liju didn’t have a choice other than to resign.
