KANNUR: The country's first fire and safety science institute will start functioning within six months at Muzhapala in Kannur's Chakkarakallu. The institute is being started under the leadership of Kerala Fire Force with the aim of imparting higher education in fire science to B.Sc degree graduates. Different hi-tech courses will be introduced from National Fire Service College, Nagpur. PG and PG Diploma courses in fire and safety science will be available in the first phase.
Changing the institution as a Fire and Rescue Regional Academy cum Research Center in the future is also under consideration. The government has decided to establish the institute in 2021. Four and a half acres of land owned by the police was used for this purpose. In the last budget, Rs 1 crore has been allocated for building construction. Construction will start soon.

MSc Fire Science, PG Diploma in Fire Science and PG Diploma in Fire Technology courses in the first phase
Those who have completed B.Sc degree can apply
The course is launched under Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT)
300 candidates will be admitted in the first batch

Those who pass the course from here will be given priority to get jobs in the fire force
