THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: “We have a Health Minister, she is the best. On the tenth day of Brahmapuram fire, she advised the people to wear masks.”, mocked Opposition leader VD Satheeshan. He criticized Health minister Veena George in the assembly.
“On the third day of the fire, minister said that there are no health issues. On what basis did she say this? A health emergency should have been declared. On what basis did the minister said so?”, asked Satheesan.
“The atmosphere is filled with toxic fumes from the burning of millions of tons of plastic. It can lead to diseases like cancer. It is similar to the issue that occurred in Vietnam where America sprinkled a chemical called ‘agent orange’ in leaves to identify soldiers. That poison is in the fumes in Brahmapuram.”, he said.
He also pointed out that the government didn’t allow an investigation into the health issues caused by the smoke using an expert agency. He alleged that they considered it as a minor issue. He criticized the government in its inability to handle the issue.
Health minister Veen George said that the opposition leader insulted her personally and demanded an apology.
