KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has lashed out at the state government and the police in connection with the incident in which a woman house surgeon was stabbed to death in Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. The court asked the government to shut down the hospitals if it cannot provide security to doctors. It also asked whether the police did not have a gun at the time of the incident. The bench comprising Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice Kauser Edappagath raised the criticism while considering the topic in a special sitting.

The court said that the government should recognize the impact of the grief of the family of the 22-year-old deceased doctor. "It is not the court that should tell the police how to provide security. Aren't security measures meant to prevent attacks?" Justice Devan Ramachandran said. The court sought an explanation from the police chief.

The court said that the police should be able to prevent such incidents by foreseeing the incidents.

"Paying tributes to Dr. Vandana. Such incidents are unheard of in other parts of the country. Don't the police have the primary responsibility to ensure the safety of the people? Then why guns are given to the police? The court can only intervene emotionally when such incidents take place," the court said.
