THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The price of rice in the public market is rising sharply after a while, making life more difficult for the common man. The rise in the price of rice even before the arrival of Onam is a cause for concern. If it continues like this, the price of rice will cross 60 when Onam comes.
The price of Jaya rice has increased to Rs 40. The retail market will have to pay even higher prices. It has increased by five rupees in the last few days. The price of raw white rice has also increased. It has increased by four rupees in the last few days. It is indicated that the reason for the increase in prices is that states including Andhra, which deliver rice to Kerala, gave more importance to exports. Despite the price hike, there is no shortage of rice in the market. But if steps are not taken to control prices before Onam, the current situation is likely to change.
Farmers in the country have drastically reduced the level of rice production due to the rains. Subsequently, the central government stopped the export of rice to prevent the price of rice from rising dramatically in the domestic market. At the same time, India's export ban had an impact on the market in countries around the world, including the United States. The price of rice exported from other countries including Vietnam has also increased significantly. Also, the UAE has suspended the export and re-export of rice imported from India since last Friday.
