NEW DELHI: The central government has released a report stating that nearly 403 Indian students have died in various foreign countries since 2018. It was Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan who presented the report in the Rajya Sabha the other day.
On examining details from 34 countries, it was found that the highest number of deaths were reported in Canada. 91 Indian students died in Canada in the last five years. Canada is followed by England (48), Russia (40), the United States (36), Australia (35), Ukraine (21), Germany (20), Cyprus (14), Italy and the Philippines (10 each).
Muraleedharan also spoke about security and arrangements to be prepared for Indian students in foreign countries. He also reminded about the measures to prevent such situations from occurring in the future. He told the Indian officials in foreign countries to visit the colleges and universities where the students are studying and carry out proper inspections.
"The safety and security of Indian students abroad is one of the foremost priorities for the Government of India. The students should inform concerned officials if they face any kind of problems or security issues," V Muraleedharan said.
The minister also assured that the government would provide necessary medical assistance and accommodation to the economically backward students. Meanwhile, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the number of Indian students going abroad to study is on the rise.
