THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It has been decided to pay the first instalment of dues to Keltron for the implementation of AI cameras to detect traffic violations. 11.79 crores is to be paid to Keltron for three months. Two instalments are due.

Minister KB Ganeshkumar had informed that the problem will be resolved in consultation with the Finance Department. It was decided to pay the arrears in the subsequent discussion. Keltron has reduced temporary staff in AI camera control rooms due to rising dues. Last week, 50 of the 140 people assigned to send fine notices were withdrawn. They were employed as daily wage workers from Kudumbashree.

35 crores had reached the exchequer as fines through AI cameras. 120 crore worth of challans from September to the end of November is ready in the control room. However, it has not been sent as postage is prepaid. The cameras were installed by companies subcontracted by Keltron. The motor vehicle department should transfer the amount after assessing the performance. The penalty amount goes directly to the treasury. The finance department should allocate the amount according to the report given by the motor vehicle department. The delay in allocating the amount is due to the financial crisis.
