Radio collar fitted wild tusker traced in Mananthavady city, schools on alert; wild buffalo in Malappuram

MANANTHAVADY: A wild tusker that entered a residential area is creating a tense situation in Mananthavady. The tusker that entered the court premises is moving towards the KSRTC depot. Forest department and police have reached there.


The tusker reached Kaniyaram early Friday morning. The people who saw the tusker immediately informed the officials of the forest department. It reached Payod at 7 am and then moved near Newmans College, mini civil station, NGO quarters and the resting place of the forest department. Finally reached KSRTC depot.

Prohibitory orders have been clamped in Mananthavady. District collector Renu Raj has warned that people should avoid coming to the town as much as possible. The forest department and the police are trying to chase the elephant away by bursting firecrackers.


Schools in Mananthavadi have been alerted by the authorities. The direction is to keep the children who have reached the school safe and those who have not left the house should not leave. Reports said the radio-collared elephant has come from Karnataka.


Meantime, a wild buffalo was noticed at Edakkara Town in Malappuram. The wild buffalo was seen Friday morning at 4. It was chased away by the forest department and the locals. All efforts are being taken to drive it away to the forest from the private sector.
