KOLKATA: Police have arrested a woman for murdering her son in Hooghly in West Bengal. The arrested person has been identified as Shanta Sharma. Shanta's son Snehangshu Sharma was found dead last week. Police have also arrested Shanta's girlfriend Iffat Parveen in the incident. According to the police, Shanta and Iffat murdered Snehangshu after he saw both of them having sex. The arrest came four days after the murder. The horrific murder took place at Adarsh Nagar in Konnagar, 25 km from Kolkata.

Shanta Sharma was in love with Iffat even before marriage. Shanta's husband also knew about this. However, he kept silent for fear of embarrassment. On Friday, Snehangshu accidentally saw his mother having a homosexual relationship with Iffat Parveen. Shanta Sharma has confessed to the police that she committed the murder fearing that the child would tell others about her illicit relationship.

The accused killed the boy by stabbing him with a knife, hitting him on the head with an iron rod and beating him with a stone statue. Criminal experts had hinted that a family member or someone who knew the child was involved in the murder.

The police conducted the investigation based on CCTV footage. The investigation was led by a team from the Chandannagar Commissionerate with the help of forensic experts. The police also examined the CCTV footage provided by former Kanaipur Panchayat Pradhan Achelal Yadav, who is also the boy's relative. After examining the CCTV footage, the police questioned the child's father and mother. During the questioning, Shanta broke down in tears and said that she and Iffat were involved in an intimate relationship. She told the police that Snehangshu saw her having sex with Iffat on Friday and this prompted her to kill the child. Shanta was arrested from her house in Konnagar and Iffat from Watgunge.
