Citizenship Amendment Act protest: Students including Malayalis detained in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Students protested yesterday in Delhi against the Citizenship Amendment Act. SFI's protest at Delhi University led to a minor clash. Fifty people, including more than 15 Malayali students, were taken into police custody. The police asked the protestors who reached the gate near the University Arts Faculty to disperse. Meanwhile, there was an altercation with the university's security personnel and activists. While explaining the matter to the media persons, the SFI activists were taken into custody in two buses by the Delhi Police and later released.

Students had protested at Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia University on Tuesday. In Jamia Milia Islamia University, MSF and NSU organizations went on strike. About 70 Malayali students who were taken into custody were later released. Police deployment, vigilance and police patrols have been increased near universities in Delhi and in areas of potential conflict including Shaheen Bagh.

Protest continues in Assam

Protests continue in Assam against the central government's notification to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act. Students protested in Guwahati under the aegis of All Assam Students Union. The effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were burnt in Dibrugarh under the auspices of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad. CPM (ML) workers protested in Kolkata and SFI protested in Chennai.
