IMPHAL: Amidst courting controversy over the odd decision, the Manipur government has finally declared a holiday for Easter, thus rescinding their earlier decision of declaring March 30 and 31st as working days. The government had to backtrack after facing huge protests from locals who are mostly Christians.

Minding the tensions in an already volatile state, governor Anusuiya Uikey risked no chance but declared a holiday on both days for Easter celebrations. The governor reasoned her earlier decision of declaring working days, for the smooth completion of the crammed-up works in government offices with just a few days to end the financial year.

However, for the majority of Christians in the state, Easter is the day that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and most families look upon these days to spend time with close ones. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) said the government's decision hurt the sentiments of the Christian community. Taking into account the spiralling protest and cynic remarks over the decision, the government decided to declare a holiday for Easter.
