THRISSUR: The BJP is taking strategic moves to gain advantage in Kerala by making the Karuvannur issue an active debate in the Lok Sabha elections. A move is on to bring Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Irinjalakuda. The move in this regard became active when the Prime Minister's office expressed interest in visiting Kerala again on April 15.
The party leadership is trying to bring the Prime Minister to Irinjalakuda near Karuvannur. However, the Prime Minister's office expressed interest in reaching Alathur for electioneering. In that case, the party is also trying to hold a public meeting in Kunnamkulam in which the Prime Minister will attend. The party central leadership assessed that with the Prime Minister himself taking up the Karuvannur issue, the matter can be actively discussed in the elections among the public, especially in Thrissur. It is also reported that along with the Karuvannur issue, there may be more serious interventions by central agencies in monthly pay off and masala bond issues. There are also unconfirmed reports that many prominent CPM leaders are likely to be questioned.
The ED initially conducted the investigation in the Karuvannur issue, but now the income tax department has taken drastic measures. They have frozen four bank accounts of Rs 9.5 crore in the name of the CPM Thrissur district committee for not mentioning it in the income tax returns. There are 10.5 crores including a fixed deposit of Rs1 crore in these accounts opened for various purposes. District secretary M M Varghese had withdrawn Rs one crore on April 2nd. There are presently 9.5 crores in the account.
The income tax department directed that the withdrawn Rs 1 crore should not be spent without specifying the source of the money. The income tax department's move following the ED action in the Karuvannur bank scam has put the CPM on the defensive as the elections are around the corner.
The ED has again summoned former MP P K Biju and CPM district secretary M M Varghese for interrogation in the Karuvannur issue tomorrow. It is known that the move is to interrogate both of them together. The officials of the ED said that M M Varghese did not give clear answers to some questions when summoned earlier.
However, the CPM said that the BJP's only aim is to hunt them in the elections. Party general secretary Sitaram Yechury said that people will respond to this.
