Kerala rejects central directive on 'multiple exit-entry' system in higher education, cites concerns over quality

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In Kerala, the central directive to provide facilities for students to stop their studies for other purposes and return at any stage after completing the first year of the four-year degree course starting this year will not be implemented in Kerala. Kerala's position is that the 'multiple exit-entry' system is impractical and will destroy the higher education sector. Only one exit is allowed in third year.

The central directive is to give a course certificate if the student stops after one year, a diploma after completing two years, a bachelor's degree in the third year and an honors degree after completing four years. Those who do not study for four years can come back and continue their studies within eight years. However, Kerala's position is that if exit is allowed from the first year, the students will drop out and the course will not be conducted.

Even though it is a four-year course, if you complete your studies with fixed credits in three years, you will get a degree. Those who obtain 75% credit in three years can continue to study in the fourth year. They will get honors with research degree. N-menus one system will also be implemented in which those who earn certain credits in five semesters can pass the course without studying the sixth semester. The state will bring an amendment to the law for this.

College can be changed from first year

As credit is included in the Academic Bank of Credit, after completing the first year, you can transfer to any college or university in the country. There should be a similar course where you want to join.

10% seats will be created as supernumerary in the first year for this purpose in varsities.

The Center recommends 120 credits for a four-year degree. However, English language proficiency, communication and skill development are also included in 133 credits in Kerala.
