NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, arrested in the liquor policy corruption case. The Supreme Court had earlier indicated that interim bail would be granted to Kejriwal as part of the Lok Sabha election campaign.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had strongly opposed granting bail to him. Kejriwal was granted bail till June 1. The bail was granted to him by a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta. Granting bail to Kejriwal is a relief to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and India Front as the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi are approaching.
Kejriwal had filed a petition in the Supreme Court pointing that ED's arrest in the liquor policy case was illegal. The lawyers have responded that Kejriwal is expected to be released today.
Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 around 9 pm. He was arrested after two hours of interrogation. The ED team reached Kejriwal's house with a warrant after the high court rejected the plea to stop his arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case. The AAP had organized massive protests across the state regarding his arrest.
