Yet another serious lapse from Kozhikode Medical College, doctors perform wrong surgery

KOZHIKODE: Yet another serious lapse from the side of Kozhikode Medical College. The doctors of the hospital performed a wrong surgery. A girl had approached the hospital for a surgery to remove her sixth finger. She was admitted and the doctors of the hospital performed a tongue-tied surgery instead of the one to be conducted on her hand. Her relatives protested after noticing the mistake, soon the doctor apologized and immediately performed another surgery and removed the sixth finger.

A native of Madura Bazar in Cheruvannoor suffered the bad experience. She was brought to the Kozhikode Medical College for surgery as her sixth finger was getting stuck in her hair and getting injured. Noticing cotton on her mouth after the surgery, her relatives asked the nurse about it. When they changed the cloth on her hand, the sixth finger was still there.

Her relatives said that when they asked about it to the nurse, her response was a smile. The nurse said the surgery is over and advised to give ice cream to her. The doctor realized the mistake when the relatives said the operation was to be done on her hand. The doctor apologized and told that it was a mistake from his side and immediately performed another operation and removed the sixth finger.

The superintendent of the medical college said that she had a tongue-tie surgery. However, the relatives said that the girl did not have any such problem and that they did not come for that surgery. After receiving further explanation from the doctor and the superintendent, the relatives decided to take further steps.

A complaint was lodged with the police alleging negligence on the part of the doctors in the same hospital for leaving a pair of scissors inside a woman’s stomach during caesarean section in 2017. She is still fighting for justice.
