Cyclone in North Kerala; Five days of rain and thunderstorm warning

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Meteorological Center has warned that rain with thunder and lightning is possible in the state for the next five days. A cyclonic circulation has formed over south coastal Tamil Nadu and a low pressure area has formed over south coastal Tamil Nadu to north Karnataka. Also there is a cyclonic circulation over North Kerala. As a result of this, the rain probability forecast.

Low pressure likely over Bay of Bengal

Low pressure is likely to form over Southwest Bay of Bengal by May 22. According to the Central Meteorological Department, it is likely to move north-eastwards and gain strength as an extreme low pressure over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24.

Thunderstorm warning

The Central Meteorological Department has informed that there is a possibility of rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places in Kerala on May 20 and 21, 2024 and strong winds with a speed of 30 to 40 km per hour and rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places in Kerala on May 22 to 24, 2024.

Meanwhile, southern districts including Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam have received heavy rains. Kollam city alone received 180 mm of rain yesterday. Punalur recorded 49.4 mm and Aryankavil 55 mm. The district received normal rainfall from last 9 to 15. But from March 1 to yesterday, 32 percent less rainfall was recorded. 228.2 mm of rain was received instead of 333.9 mm of rain. It rained intermittently in Kollam district. The rain is more active in the evening and at night.
