KOCHI: April 28, 2016. Malayalees, who were proud of women's safety, bowed their heads in shame that day. The law student was found dead in a one-room house near Kuruppampady canal in Perumbavoor that night.

Police did not take it seriously as it was assembly election time. State politics were thrown into disarray after her classmates revealed the facts. Policemen were suspended and Crime Detachment DYSP Jijimon was assigned to investigate.

The defendant's shoes were found 100 meters away from the house, which was a turning point in the case. Searching for the accused after hanging the shoes in the area brought shame upon the government.

The subsequent investigation focused on the neighbour's statement, the wound on the body indicating gaping teeth, the yellow shirt, etc., but no clue was found. The post-mortem report said that the 24-year-old woman was a victim of brutal cruelty and the body was mutilated with a knife. 38 wounds were found on the body.

The Left government that came to power appointed a new investigation team under the leadership of ADGP B Sandhya. On the 20th day, Ameerul Islam was arrested from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan revealed the information through a press conference.

The trial began on March 13, 2017. A hundred witnesses were examined by the prosecution. The arguments were based on scientific evidence due to the absence of eyewitnesses. In December, the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court sentenced the accused to be hanged.

She asked for water, Ameer gave her alcohol instead

Ameer, who is sexually perverted, had his eye on the female student. He came to her house after making sure that no one was there. The girl was forced to have sex but she resisted. She backed away but Ameer came back and grabbed her. When she resisted, he took the knife and stabbed her in the neck and then in the abdomen, and tore off her clothes. Amir poured alcohol into her mouth when the girl asked for water when she was close to death. After confirming that she was dead, the accused left the spot. The knife was thrown to the back of the house. On the way back, the defendant's shoes got stuck in the nearby canal. The police had collected details of about 2 lakh phone calls and fingerprints of 5000 people including neighbours. Ameer was arrested by the police in disguise.
