Centre to discuss Manipur issue, move after criticism from RSS

NEW DELHI: The central government has decided to negotiate with the Kuki and Meitei sects in Manipur where the conflict continues. A decision in this regard was taken in a high-level meeting called by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Central officials will hold talks with the Kuki and Meitei sections. Amit Shah also suggested strict action against those who take the law into their hands. The meeting also decided to deploy more troops in Manipur if needed.

Meites constitute about 53 percent of Manipur's population and live in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, including the Nagas and Kukis, account for 40 percent and live mainly in the hill districts. Clashes between Manipur's Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3 last year have left at least 225 dead and displaced nearly 50,000 people. Many of them are still living in relief centres.

Army Chief General Manoj Pandey, Union Home Secretary Ashok Bhalla and Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi attended the meeting held at the Ministry of Home Affairs. A week ago, RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat had suggested that action should be taken on the Manipur issue. Mohan Bhagwat's reaction was in response to the BJP's setback in the election.
